The experience of the European Journey was one of empowering people to understand the rights that are inherently theirs. I will never forget the positive reaction of a waiter in Verona, Italy, who had seen the Journey and its human rights message on TV. In those 15 cities, I never encountered a negative response to our purpose.

Due to the success of the Journey, I am taking part in a new and equally challenging series of events in 1999—a European Marathon for Human Rights. Beginning in Athens, the marathon will again celebrate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As developments in Europe this year have shown, it is more relevant than ever.

The European Journey for Religious Freedom and its organiser, the Church of Scientology, are to be congratulated for increasing awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights throughout Europe.
