Although the UDHR provided an agreed-upon standard of human rights, more than fifty years later many people still do not know it, or know it only vaguely. Even in Europe, where most nations have incorporated its principles into their post-war constitutions and pan-European bodies have stiffened its legal muscle through numerous treaties, it is still not fully understood that the Declaration protects certain inalienable rights, and that these are not subject to negotiation or compromise.
Unless the principles of the UDHR are known, they will not be acted upon; as long as they are not acted upon, widespread persecution, intolerance and discrimination will continue—witness the “ethnic cleansing” occurring in Europe today.
The European Journey for Religious Freedom was intended to increase people’s awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Knowing your rights is the first step in standing up for them. The aim of the Journey was to celebrate 1998 as the 50th Anniversary of the UDHR and to build support for religious freedom and human rights at both a grassroots and government level.
