The Netherlands

The European Journey arrives in Hoek Van Holland near The Hague, and the “Torch of Freedom” is passed to Dutch runner Paul Rood.

   T
he Netherlands has been generally tolerant in the field of religion. In the early 1980s, the Dutch government conducted an investigation into new religions and concluded that they gave no cause for concern. The government upholds the Constitution and has rejected pressure by less tolerant governments such as Germany, France and Belgium to turn itself into a vehicle of discrimination against minority religions.

Passing through the Netherlands, the European Journey acknowledged Dutch officials for observing the principles of the Declaration and urged them to resist external pressure to single out minorities for discriminatory treatment.
