The study noted that, “recent years have seen an astonishing and, for post-war Western Europe, unique policy of official, and officially endorsed, vilification of and discrimination against certain of these groups including the Jehovah’s Witnesses and, most particularly, the Church of Scientology.”

Thus it was appropriate that on August 10, 1998, the European Journey for Religious Freedom climaxed in a colourful and moving multi-faith festival of speeches and music in Frankfurt’s Old Opera Square.

Before an 8,000-strong, flag-waving, cheering crowd, scholars and human rights leaders joined Jewish, Moslem, Buddhist, Sikh, Christian, Hindu and Scientology representatives to celebrate religious freedom and call for an end to governmental religious intolerance.
