Of course, this will be resisted to a greater or lesser degree. The greater the resistance, the more the need of such mechanisms. If there were no resistance, there would be no threats to religious liberty.

As matters stand, some countries in Europe are heading down a dangerous path, away from religious freedom and the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and towards government interference with religious practice. This slide into a society where the only tolerated religions are those sanctioned by the state and practised by a majority of the people must be arrested and reversed. Religious freedom is the birthright of all men and women.

One of the greatest campaigners for civil rights through peaceful means was Martin Luther King, who once said, “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” A determined effort is needed by religious bodies, human rights organisations and concerned citizens to ensure that religious liberty in Europe is safeguarded for our own and future generations.
